Design Notes

Canoa was conceived for family use and global cruising, combining exceptional efficiency, seakeeping and comfort with performance extending well beyond that normally associated with yachts of this type. Her distinctive three-tier superstructure features extensive glazing and single-level decks, creating near 360-degree views and a strong connection with the surrounding environment.

 

At the heart of the project is a hull form developed by Humphreys Yacht Design to combine efficient long-range passage-making with high-speed capability when required, providing greater freedom and flexibility when cruising or repositioning. An extensive hydrodynamic development program, combining high-resolution RANS CFD analysis with large-scale model testing, was used to assess and refine resistance, running trim, seakeeping and manoeuvrability across a wide range of speeds, headings and sea states. The resulting hull delivers a remarkably broad performance envelope, balancing efficiency and comfort at normal cruising speeds with the ability to cover distance quickly when required.

 

Canoa combines efficient twin-shaft propulsion with a parallel hybrid system, providing flexibility in how power is generated and used across different operating modes. The resulting performance combines a range of more than 5,000 nautical miles at normal passage-making speeds from a relatively modest fuel capacity, with high-speed capability achieved from comparatively modest installed power.

 

The hull is constructed in aluminium, with composite construction employed for the upper levels of the superstructure as part of an integrated approach to structural weight, centre of gravity and performance.

Operation

Canoa's hybrid propulsion, battery system and large solar arrays integrated within the superstructure form part of a considered approach to onboard energy management, providing greater flexibility and efficiency across different operating modes.

 

A combined fin and gyro stabilisation system provides effective roll control across a broad operating envelope, allowing each system to play to its particular strengths. Working independently or together depending on the operating condition, the arrangement delivers effective stabilisation from anchor and low-speed operation through to passage-making, while helping to minimise weight, space and energy demands.

Layout and Accommodation

The exterior design and naval architecture were developed together from the outset, allowing proportions, deck levels, weight distribution and shallow draft to be considered as part of a single integrated design.

 

Generous guest spaces and extensive glazing create a strong connection with the yacht's surroundings, while carefully considered crew circulation and service routes provide effective separation between guest and operational areas. A dedicated

longitudinal crew walkway through the lower part of the yacht connects the forward crew accommodation with the technical and working areas aft, supporting efficient operation during extended cruising.

Toys and Tenders

Canoa's expansive aft deck provides a highly flexible space for carrying tenders, watercraft and equipment for extended cruising, supported by dedicated launch and recovery systems designed for practical operation in a seaway. A concealed foredeck crane provides additional handling capability for the rescue boat and jet skis.

We took a highly integrated approach to the design, striving to marry all the technical, functional, and Client-specific requirements with a rigorous naval architecture effort to underpin her operational abilities. Intensive CFD work was ultimately validated by one of the most comprehensive model testing programs we’ve ever undertaken.
