On Saturday 11th October 2008, the eight strong fleet of Volvo 70’s started the first leg of their gruelling 39,000 mile circumnavigation. In recent years the Volvo Ocean Race has become synonymous with cutting edge design and raw human perseverance. One of the eight boats lining up for the start was Team Russia, designed by the Humphreys office. Skippered by Austrian Andreas Hanakamp and crewed by a truly international mix of professional sailors, the team have been putting in some great 24 hour runs and will certainly be a team to watch over the forthcoming legs.

The route takes the fleet from Alicante, Spain to Cape Town then to Cochin (India), Singapore, Qingdao (China), Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), Boston, Galway, Marstrand, Stockholm and finally finishing in the beautiful city of St Petersburg in Russia.

The whole Humphreys design team set up base in Alicante for the week before the start and it was a fantastic experience for everyone to be involved in the build up and to see the race get underway. HYD wish Team Russia the very best of luck for a fast and safe race.
