Humphreys Yacht Design has been involved with Northshore Yachts since 1987 and has formed a strong relationship with the company, working on four of the yachts in the Southerly series. Northshore pioneered their unique swing keel in the early eighties, and the Humphreys office moved the concept on over the years, particularly with the addition of twin rudders which gave the range a new dimension of sailing capability.

Every detail — from the shape and structure of the hull to the layout of the deck, from the sail plan arrangement to the interior styling — is designed to achieve the best possible sailing experience for each Southerly crew. These fine yachts are popular with experienced families and yachtsmen because they are easy to handle – in fact most models in the series can be sailed by a crew of two – and due to their well-proportioned decks and interiors.

Southerly yachts are known throughout the world as variable draught cruising yachts thanks to the swing keel that offers them myriad possibilities for exploration. Today, there are over 700 Southerly owners worldwide who can testify to the remarkable versatility of the swing keel system: it provides a deep draught for powerful sailing performance and precise directional stability in high seas, yet a shallow draught for exploring shallow creeks, inland waterways and low-tide harbours. A Southerly yacht can also be beached: with the keel raised she will rest upright on her hull grounding plate.

Northshore Yachts Ltd was established in 1971 on the Hampshire coast and with order books buoyant throughout the 70s the company acquired larger waterside premises by Chichester harbour where Southerly yachts are now designed and built.
