HYD founder, Rob Humphreys, has over thirty years experience in production yacht design, commencing with the Conquest 23 Mini Tonner in 1978 and then, soon after, the Trapper 950 – the most famous of which, Roller Coaster, finished second at the 1979 Half Ton world championship. From there followed a wide range of very popular and now sought after production yacht designs, such as the Contessa 33, Contessa 27, Sigma 400 and the Gib’Sea 414, to name but a few.

HYD’s current range of production yacht designs for Oyster, Elan and Southerly are built on long-standing relationships with each company, going back almost two decades. The portfolio includes luxury global cruisers such as the Oyster 82, performance cruiser-racers like the Elan 410 and affordable cruising boats such as the Impression 344.

HYD’s emphasis with all production designs is to maximise comfort and functionality without comprimising performance. It is a discipline which requires more than just naval architecture and Rob Humphreys’ vast experience in the production sector has proved invaluable in terms of the more rounded skills required. One of the greatest difficulties in any volume design work is that there is no one specific client, so a given model has to be spread across a reasonable catchment area of market interests, and the Humphreys formula for efficient, functional boats that are easy to handle has proved extremely popular over the years.
