The Southerly 42RST

The Southerly 42RST is a blue water cruising yacht which appeals to experienced families and yachtsmen, but can be handled easily by a crew of just two. Her impressive sail plan results in powerful windward performance when the swing keel – a hallmark of the Southerly range – is lowered to its maximum draught of 2.72m. With the keel raised however, the 42RST can explore shallow waters, lagoons and marinas at no risk of running aground, and this versatility of cruising options is what owners really appreciate.

The sail plan comprises a tall fractional rig, self-tacking furling jib and large mainsail, giving a total sail area of nearly 72m2. In light breezes an optional gennaker can be flown from a removable bowsprit. This yacht’s new hull shape is a further development in Humphreys’ long pedigree designing Southerly hulls. A modern plumb stem increases waterline length and a broad transom maintains volume aft, increasing the interior space available to ensure the comfort of all passengers.

The Southerly 42RST has semi-balanced twin rudders which provide reassuring directional stability. Her teak-laid cockpit is deep and well-protected with comfortable seats that are long enough to sleep on al fresco. The cockpit sole is the correct width to provide leg bracing when the yacht heels and coamings are gently sloped outwards; an optional spray hood neatly folds down into a special recess when not in use. The aft area of the cockpit is designed to enable the helmsman to make full use of the wide diameter wheel while standing at the helm or sitting on the coamings, where he can enjoy the yacht’s light and responsive steering.

The standard interior of the 42RST features two cabins – a twin forward and a double aft – two heads and a central area taken up by the galley and dining area. With ample storage solutions and a fully-equipped sit-down pilot’s workstation, this Southerly is a relaxing home from home for her sailing companions.
