The H39 has been designed as a high performance, dual purpose cruiser-racer. The design ethos has tried to capture the wholesome, cruiser-racer and offshore-capable spirit of some of the offices’ early CHS designs, but in modern day incarnation. Utilising up-to-the-minute build materials, techniques and engineering as well as our latest thinking and design tools, it has been possible to package a fully fitted out and offshore functional interior within a powerful, light displacement hull form in order to offer a genuine cruiser-racer with fun, fast, light and responsive sailing characteristics.

A large CFD/VPP study was undertaken on this project to investigate the design space of interest to the client. Working closely with performance optimisation specialists KND Sailing Performance, the study comprised a select number of design candidates being run through KND’s DasBoot CFD code and North Sails VPP in conjunction with our own analysis using our in-house FS Flow CFD code and WinDesign6 (6 degrees of freedom) VPP. Structuring the optimisation process in this way has provided good results for us before, allowing a large number of design candidates and performance refinement to be carried out, yet for a relatively modest R&D budget appropriate for a relatively small design of this size.

The end result is a design that can be moded in a number of different ways to suit all IRC and ORC racing formats, including single or twin rudder, fin or T-keel, pinhead mainsail with fixed backstay or square top mainsail with running backstays as well as bowsprit or spinnaker pole. Depending on configuration the IRC trial rating is in the range of 1.125 to 1.144.

The composite structures have been built by Oceantec, Slovenia, with the finishing and fitout carried out by Fox’s Marina & Boatyard, UK. The H39 has been engineered to ISO 12215 Category A (Ocean) by Richard Oliver of Applied Structural Analysis Ltd, with the hull, deck and internal structure of infused E-glass foam sandwich construction.

The coachroof design has been carefully manipulated to provide a fully functional, working interior with 6ft plus headroom throughout the main living areas, whilst offering an uncompromised racing solution. Cabin top mounted transverse jib tracks allow for a range of optimal sheeting angles for inshore racing and efficient “end-plating” of the headsail, with outboard lead padeyes for wider angles. The large, deep cockpit has been ergonomically designed to enable both efficient crew work for inshore racing manoeuvres as well providing comfort and safety for longer offshore races and when cruising. The cockpit seats have coaming backrests and incorporate a moulded footrest.

Below deck, the H39 features a comfortable and practical interior arrangement with a well-appointed galley, saloon and navigation station, 3 double berths and an enclosed head / shower room. There is a wet locker oppotiste the heads and generous stowage lockers throughout.
